Kids and Cupcakes

This past weekend (I'm catching up!) Michael had a board review class that began Friday after lunch, went through Saturday and Sunday, and finished Monday before lunch.  It was a long weekend without Dad, but we were able to get some good quality time in with the other moms and kids missing their husband/dad.  On Friday, our playgroup met at Yolo for frozen yogurt before heading to the park to play.

On Saturday afternoon, we met at Katie's house to celebrate Brooklyn's first birthday with cupcakes and more playing, of course!  I got some fun pictures of the kids enjoying their cupcakes, including the birthday girl!  I can't say enough how grateful I am for all of these ladies (as well as Kelsie, who couldn't make it) and all that they have taught me about being a friend and being a mother.  I'm going to miss them come September!

Almost the whole gang!

Adorable birthday girl!

Just checking to see if anyone notices he's trying to turn the faucet on.  I see you, Paul!

Cute girl!

Krystal, Brock and Will

Brandi and sweet Zooey!

Brock looks a little sad but really he is laughing because he and Paul are throwing grass everywhere.

Zooey's not so sure what to think about me yet...

Katie and the birthday girl!  Look at those pigtails!

These two were the last to come inside.  They did not want stop playing with the grass!

I Bake!

I love to bake and I've been waiting until Paul was old enough to help me out.  I'm still not sure he is, but I decided to go for it anyway.  I pre-measured every thing and put each ingredient into kid-friendly (i.e. plastic and bigger than necessary to minimize spill).  I set Paul up on the counter and helped him pour each ingredient in.  We made banana chocolate chip muffins and they were amazing!  (We just subbed the egg for a flax egg to make it OK for Paul.)

Gotta lick the whisk!

This activity definitely required an outfit change.

Voila!  They are done.  Paul kept counting them and saying, "I bake!  I bake!"

Finally they were cool enough to try.  He loved them (so did I).

Nom nom nom!  Chocolate is a favorite food for Paul right now for sure.

Valentine's Day/Wicked

So for Valentine's Day this year,  I decided to make special Valentine's for our loved ones with Paul.  He had so much fun painting and gluing hearts and coloring for this project.  I only took pictures of him painting and there are no final product pictures... but he looked too cute in his smock (my T-shirt) with his face covered in various amounts of paint.

So proud and excited to be painting!

Really getting into it!

 My Valentine's!

The day after Valentine's Day, Michael and I went to see Wicked!  It was amazing and I loved every minute of it!  I can't wait to see what our next show will be.  :)

SNOW (and Sam's Birthday)

The week of my birthday brought more cold weather, but this time SNOW!  Thursday, we got some light flurries, but I was so excited I bundled Paul and I up and we went into the backyard to play as it fell.  Like I said, it was light and you could hardly tell it was snowing.  But I got one cute picture of Paul with all his gear on! (Thanks for the adorable hat, Aunt Jess!)

The morning of my birthday, I woke up to chocolates, tickets to Wicked and an awesome pen drawing by Michael! I loved the drawing and I knew he put a lot of time, effort and thought into it, which made it a very special gift.  I already knew about the tickets, which I have been brimming with excitement for!  I have wanted to see Wicked for years and last year I found out it would be coming back to Memphis and I told Michael I wanted to go for my birthday.

I made (and burned) some pancakes for breakfast and then opened several cards and gifts that had come in the mail that week.  It was wonderful to get special presents from my family and friends who all seem too far away.

Since Michael had a long day working in the clinic, I decided to make it a special day for Paul and I by taking him to his first movie.  We have been listening to Frozen songs and watching several of the videos on YouTube for weeks, so I knew he would love the movie.  I was a little worried about whether or not he would sit still or want to run around, but  I decided we would just go for it!  I packed some special treats for us (popcorn, yogurt raisins, Twizzlers and chocolate) and after he woke up from his nap, we headed to the theater.

We got there right in time for the previews.  The previews were really loud, and Paul just kind of glued himself to me by leaning back against me in my lap.  He watched intently.  Soon, the lights went off all the way and Frozen began to play.  That was my cue to bring out our smuggled popcorn.

Paul settled a little and seemed less apprehensive.  One of the songs we listened to often -- "Do You Wanna Build a Snowman" -- played early in the movie and I knew Paul recognized it because he sang along.  He was attentive for the whole movie.  He sang along to "Let It Go" and said "Uh-oh!" when it ended.  He sat in my lap until the very end and ate his fair share of the snacks.  As the end credits began to roll, Paul stood up and waved to the screen, saying "Bye bye!"  Once the end credits and song finished, he clapped.  It was a perfect first movie experience!  And such a relaxing way for me to spend my birthday.

That night, after picking up Michael from the Eye Center, we all went to Yolo for frozen yogurt.  I got a huge bowl of chocolate with cookie dough and Michael got coffee crunch and marscapone gelato.  It was delicious!  Paul obviously loved it and helped me tackle my huge bowl.

Right before we went to bed that night, we checked the weather and saw that there was a potential for snow overnight.  I didn't want to get my hopes up, since it had only threatened to snow all winter.  But I guess I got one more birthday present, because when we woke up in the morning, our neighborhood was transformed by a (thin) layer of snow!  We hopped up and got dressed quickly before heading outside.  It was perfect timing for Paul, too, having just seen Frozen.

Dad tried to teach Paul to throw a snowball, but he was surprisingly more interested in kicking than throwing.  He did get one good toss in though!

Aren't they cute?

I love this picture of Paul and I.  Such a fun morning!

Michael put all the hard work in and made us a snowman!

Paul was too interested in the "no-man" to look at the camera.  Throughout the day we would look out back to check on our snowman.  He made it to Sunday afternoon and then melted.  Almost three weeks later, Paul still asks about the snowman.

We were hungry and amped up from the morning's excitement, so we decided to make the half-mile walk to Chick-fil-a for breakfast!  We picked up some movies from Redbox on our way home and took it easy the rest of the day.
